FINAL HIGH SCHOOL RANKINGS
March 1, 2010

1. Syracuse: What they did in the state tournament was more impressive than Springville. Everyone on the 5A state championship team possessed passion including coaches and players. Heck, they had the best fans of the entire tournament. Hazlett was a great leader with great supporting cast in Britney Martin.

2. Springville: I still feel they are the best team in the state, but after watching the one-man show at state, I couldn't put them as #1. Lexi Eaton was a monster on offense. Sadie Clements and Jessica Jensen did all the little things right to help them reach their dream of a state title. Springville returns Eaton, but without Jensen and Clements, there is not a huge supporting cast. None of the younger kids were really developed.

3. Pleasant Grove: Hamson proved to be the best player in the state. Once she gets the ball, she is unstoppable. Hamson and Hoffman may be the two most improved players in the state. Hoffman had to handle the pressure of breaking presses all season long. It only helped her get better. Glen Larsen will be the 5A Coach of the Year Runner-Up. PG was the #4 team out of Region 4 and knocked off two #1's before facing Syracuse.

4. American Fork: They squeaked by Fremont in the quarter-finals but lost to PG in the semi's. The seniors seemed to run out of gas at state. Seniors Krommenhoek and Moeai were the leaders and captains of this team and carried them to a Region 4 title. The up and coming sophomore guard Grace Farnsworth really showed her potential at state and will have a huge break out year as a junior.

5. Bingham: The Miners had the toughest draw in the first round. They were Region 3 champions and were rewarded by opening up with Pleasant Grove. PG just happened to play one of their best games in a flat out dog fight. Sophomore Dezz Ramos is the best point guard in the state and almost willed Bingham to the quarter-finals.

6. Brighton: Kylie Herschi was a work horse for a team that got bounced by the eventual state champions Syracuse. They competed for a half before they were exposed. They are well coached. Players on this team all have the confidence and trust from their coach to do what they can do. They all seem to have the green light to shoot or attack. Brighton had some big wins this season, but couldn't pull off the biggest win of the year.

7. Timpanogos: I didn't have them in my rankings all season, but this team is well coached. Melinda Johnson is intense and demands the most out of her kids. Morgan Bailey was a huge part in helping Timpanogos almost upset Springville in the Finals. They return Anderson and the Riggs next season, but losing Bailey to BYU will hurt this team inside.

8. Mt. Crest: Had they hit either one of the chipper shots against Timpanogos within the last 5 seconds of the game, they would have jumped ahead of Timp. Bri Jessop really came on strong the last 5 games to earn herself a spot on the All-Tournament team. Mt. Crest loses their guards who were very very solid all year long. They hit big shots at critical times. Coach Brittany Johnson has to be up for the 4A Coach of the Year (along with Johnson and Warner from Springville).

9. Skyline: Coach Deb Bennett got her team to the semi-finals, and like Alta, Brighton, and PG, they lost to Syracuse. One of the finest athletes in the state Whitney Jenkins was really quiet at state and didn't really get enough touches in my opinion. Their post play really carried them through to the semi's, but Syracuse athleticism over powered them. This team is all about team defense. Everyone wants to believe that defense wins championships, but you must have some offense to go with it.

10. Lone Peak: Why? I don't know. They may not deserve it after losing to Taylorsville in the first round of the state tournament. Coaches and players went to scout Taylorsville's play-in game and walked away feeling way over-confident. If anyone pressured this team, they struggled. I don't know what the future is for this program, but they return Johnson and Funk, two of the top juniors in the state. This team should be the favorite to win it all next year (though I know Britney Martin and company will have something to say about it).

I have to admit that the top 4A teams and 5A teams were clearly better than the top 3A/2A/1A teams. I didn't get to watch all the smaller school teams play, but I did watch some of the better 3A teams. Ya, one of the better 3A schools (Morgan) who had a big win over Mt. Crest early in the season, but it was one game. Heck, Syracuse men lost to Le Moyne 82-79 in an exhibition game. That doesn't give Le Moyne the higher ranking. The 3A teams were competitive and created a better atmosphere than 4A and 5A, but the overall competition was not as good.

** NOTE ** Stay tuned for the All-State Teams. I will chose a 1st Team, 2nd Team, and a 3rd Team. I will also announce the top teams heading into next season as well as give an overall final thought on the 2010 season.

JESSICA JENSEN COMMITS TO IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY
Idaho State Head Coach Seton Sobolewski, Jessica Jensen, Maralee Jensen and Rich Jensen
On her visit to Idaho State University Friday, Jessica Jensen met the energetic coach, Seton Sobolewski and his staff. She fell in love with the campus, the players, the coaches, the institute building, and of course the style of play of the Bengal's. With all that said, Coach Sobolewski is a post clinician, something Jessica and her parents are excited about. Jessica is the 74th best senior forward in the country (ESPN Hoopgurlz). She has a tremendous upside to her and will cherish her time as a Bengal. Friday night, ISU beat Sacramento State by 2 in OT. Jessica's high school teammate Sadie Clements has already signed with Sacramento State. They were both sitting right behind their future college benches. As best friends they will continue to see each other as they go from high school teammates to college rivalries. Jessica choose ISU over Weber State and Southern Utah. Congratulations to Jessica Jensen and her parents!!!
